Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication that significantly reduces the risk of contracting HIV. When taken as prescribed, it is 99% effective in preventing the virus. PrEP is available either as a daily pill or as an injection administered every two months.
Where can I obtain PrEP?
PrEP is available through the Shelby County Health Department free or at low cost.
Is PrEP affordable?
Yes. We collaborate with insurance providers for those who are insured and work directly with PrEP manufacturers to assist uninsured individuals. Regardless of your insurance status, we will ensure you have access to PrEP.
What is PEP?
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is a two-pill regimen designed for emergency situations involving potential HIV exposure. Since timely administration is critical, PEP must be started within 72 hours of exposure, whether through sexual contact, needle use, or other means. The Shelby County Health Department offers PEP; however, if you require it outside of business hours, please seek assistance at the nearest emergency room.
